Mercedes-AMG is a car series focused on performance, similar to BMW's M series and Audi's S series. This week, the editor had the privilege of participating in a test drive event for the Mercedes GLB AMG, which significantly differs from the domestically produced GLB in terms of powertrain, exterior design, and more. The test drive model was the 2021 AMG GLB 35 4MATIC, with a suggested retail price of 449,800 yuan. Here is my test drive summary, which I hope will provide some reference value.

The Mercedes GLB AMG is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, with a maximum power of 225 kW and a maximum torque of 400 N·m. It is matched with an 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission and equipped with a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. Judging solely by the power parameters, this 2.0T has a profound reserve of power. According to official data, the car's 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 5.2 seconds, making it a solid performance car.

The positive throttle calibration makes the car seem very light to drive, without any dragging or sluggishness at the start. A slightly deeper press on the accelerator results not only in increased speed but also a rather pleasant engine roar, enhancing the desire to drive. Don't assume this performance SUV is difficult to handle; actually, from the editor's experience, in comfort mode, the Mercedes GLB AMG is quite "obedient." The power output is strong but the throttle is easy to control. When the driving mode is switched to sport, the car's "rowdy" side is undoubtedly revealed, with a significant upgrade in acceleration capability.

In my opinion, the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission on this car plays a dual role. For instance, in comfort mode, smooth shifting actions organize the power output in an orderly manner, providing a relatively stable and comfortable driving environment. When the accelerator is pressed deeper, it can keenly discern the driver's intention and improve shifting efficiency to meet the fast-paced driving demands.

The braking force is very sufficient but it does not all release at once at the initial stage, giving a more linear feel. For a powerful performance car, high-efficiency braking is important for reliably stopping the vehicle in emergencies.

It is worth mentioning that the Mercedes GLB AMG offers a suspension stiffness adjustment function, which allows for better handling of vibrations on bumpy roads. However, its chassis tuning still clearly leans towards sportiness, and the suspension provides ample lateral support, allowing the vehicle to maintain a more controlled body posture during cornering or lane changes.

Interior noise insulation is not a strong suit of the Mercedes GLB AMG. During high-speed cruising, the cabin's quietness is fairly average, primarily due to tire and engine noise. However, the sound of the engine running does not seem intrusive, and it does not make the driving experience monotonous.

After discussing the car's dynamic performance, let's look at its exterior design. The sporty surrounding at the front and the extensive black decorations on the body seem to highlight its identity as a performance car. The front face uses a vertical waterfall grille, combined with stylish headlights on both sides, providing strong visual impact. The body is square, and if the roofline transitioned more smoothly at the C-pillar, I feel the body proportions would be more harmonious. The rear does not have many attention-catching designs, with dual exhausts at the bottom, although the exhaust pipes are relatively small in diameter.

The interior quality is strong; sitting in the driver's seat, you are first drawn to the dual-screen setup, which exudes a strong technological atmosphere. The air conditioning vents still follow the turbine style, a significant feature of Mercedes family interiors. The steering wheel feels full and fits well with the palms at the three and nine o'clock positions, making it not easy to slip while turning. The interior of the Mercedes GLB AMG is indeed attractive, not by using solid wood panels or extensive leather wrapping to create a sense of luxury, but by pursuing a tech-focused and minimalist vibe.

From this test drive experience, the editor gained a relatively comprehensive understanding of the Mercedes GLB AMG. Its driving quality and handling performance left a good impression on me. However, the relatively high price of this car has deterred some consumers.
