Mercedes-Benz G-Class 2020 G 500 Special Edition is an almost flawless car. Its classic rugged exterior design can attract both men and women of different age groups. The interior maintains Mercedes' high-end luxury style, and its price is as high as 1,898,800 yuan, so there are no shortcomings in terms of configuration.
This car is equipped with a 4.0T V8 engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 421 and a peak torque of 610 Nm. The tested 0-100 km/h acceleration is 5.72 seconds, and the tested fuel consumption per 100 km is 16.7L. In terms of power reserve, it is more than enough for various road conditions and driving environments. In sport mode, a gentle push on the accelerator propels the car forward with an explosive power, the chassis feedback is solid, and steering becomes very precise. The unique roar of the V8 engine is a kind of enjoyment; in economy mode, the power remains sufficient, while the chassis becomes more comfortable, and the road feel transmitted from the suspension is very vague, and the precision of the steering system decreases, making it suitable for use during traffic congestion.
The Mercedes G-Class is highly praised for its three locking differentials; however, from my personal test drive experience, these three locks just make the G-Class's passability very outstanding. It is also the model with the longest suspension travel in its class, ensuring good crossing ability on crossed axle roads, and the four-wheel drive system's power distribution is very well-executed. Even if two tires leave the ground simultaneously, power can be distributed to the other two grounded tires, minimizing power loss and providing strong traction. However, there are significant downsides: firstly, the reliability is not great. During desert testing, the gearbox tends to overheat easily, and on more extreme mountain roads, its climbing ability is inferior to hardcore off-road vehicles, mainly because the tuning is already biased towards road performance.
Although it's a medium-large off-road SUV, the rear space of the Mercedes G500 is relatively small, and the seat design is overly straight, not ergonomic, causing discomfort like back pain during long rides. Additionally, the current model's chassis tuning tries to balance road and off-road capabilities, leading to somewhat mediocre performance; it lacks the reliability of hardcore off-road vehicles compared to pure road SUVs. Therefore, it is an undeniably expensive toy whose product performance does not match its high price.
